Exercise 5.6 (p 220)

Dave:
1. "Hey you, I think you can't really say that one opinion is better than another one. Don''t you agree?"
Me:
Hey Dave. I disagree with that. From my research, there were many people with many different views on Ocean Pollution and the ways to solve it. Many believed that getting involved in organizations and donating was enough to help, while others thought that actually taking action would be the best result to end ocean pollution. I believe their opinion is better and more beneficial.

Dave
2. "There's all this stuff in the book about research as a process of discovery. What did you discover?"
In this assignment in Curious Researcher, we had to recap our research process and answer Dave's questions. Overall, answering these questions really made me reflect and think back to my whole research process and how much I have learned. Writing a research paper may be a long process, but the exercises from Curious Researcher and feedback from other students was really helpful through the research process. To say the least, I am glad to be finished.

Me:
Well Dave, the book was right. Research is definitely a topic of discovery, and I was able to discover a whole lot. I discovered the percentage of ocean pollution world-wide. I was also able to discover the primary causes of ocean pollution and how it has negatively progressed. I also learned about many ways that we could stop the problem of ocean pollution. I learned about ocean pollution's cause and effects on God's creation, and was also able to discover a Biblical perspective on pollution.

Dave:
3. What do you figure was the most challenging problem you had to solve while working on this research project? How did you solve it?
Me:
The most challenging problem I had while writing my research paper was finding Christian or Biblical articles on ocean pollution. It was almost impossible to find an article that focused on a Christian view on just ocean pollution. The way I solved this problem was changing the words to what I was researching. For example, instead of researching 'Christian view on ocean pollution' or 'marine biology Christianity', I researched 'Creation Stewardship' and 'Creation Care'. I also took many articles that spoke solely on pollution and incorporated it into my paper.

Dave:
4. "After all this work, what do you take away from this experience? What have you learned that you can use?
Me:
Dave, after this work I have grown a great hatred for writing research papers. In all reality though, I've learned how to better search for scholarly sources. I have also learned how to be much more concise in my writing and different ways to search for topics. I have also learned to pick a topic of interest because a research paper requires much time investment, and I enjoyed investing my time into a topic that I had much interest on. Overall, I have learned how to manage my time and prepare for correctly for the process of writing a research paper. It may take longer than what I want, but ultimately the results are so much better than leaving a paper for last minute and having a hard time looking for scholarly sources.

Exercise 5.1 (p 189-190)

In this assignment in Curious Researcher called 'Wrestling with the Draft', I found that answering the questions of who is dominating my research paper was a very helpful reminder of how my research paper should be written. It helped me shape my quotations and how they should be supported with my own opinions. This assignment really reminded me of who the writer of this paper really is and still to maintain my opinion.

In my draft of my research paper, the color or highlighting that dominates my paper is mainly my written work and my thoughts and ideas and that is the yellow highlighting. I am consistently turning over my thoughts to my sources because all my thoughts formed from my sources. Most of my sources, if not all are all sources with facts of ocean pollution. My thoughts all formed from the information I gathered at the same time still maintaining my own personal opinion. My opinion is also very concise in my thoughts. My source is appropriate to to support the purpose of my paper because my paper is primarily about how ocean pollution can be solved. My sources include many facts of how ocean pollution is formed and also gives information on how it can be stopped. In examining the pattern of my highlighting in my draft, I see a consistent pattern of my work and opinion which follows with a little bit of pink highlighting, which is information from all of my sources. My draft is primarily more yellow highlighting because although there is a consistent pattern, my opinions and input dominates my paper. Something I have learned from writing previous papers in this class when using a quotation, it should always be backed up with an individual thought or idea of your own. The few quotations I include in my paper are always followed by my own opinion. In my paper, the person that wins the "wrestling match" is definitely me, as the writer.

Exercise 4.3 (p 164-165)

For this exercise of Curious Researcher, we were asked to compose three different introductions of what is going to soon become our research paper. I found this method very helpful in getting my ideas straight and the feedback from other students will also be helpful when choosing an introduction.

1. Did you know that 80% of marine pollution comes from land-based activities? Our oceans are negatively affected today because of the pollution caused by us citizens today. This unfortunately is happening worldwide and we haven’t done much to fix this problem. That 80% of pollution comes from oil, fertilizers, garbage or waste, sewage disposal, toxic chemicals, and just plain laziness. Due to our nations laziness to get rid of waste in a more reasonable manner, our oceans are suffering and not only our oceans, but the people as well. Think about how many beaches are also affected by all of our pollution? The waste eventually leads to the shorelines which affects the beauty of the beaches. How about the food we put into our mouth? Do we not stop and think that sea animals are affected by ocean pollution? Well those sea animals eat or take in these chemicals and these are the animals we are eating. Food poisoning can occur when you eat seafood that is contaminated with bacteria. The most well known ones are lobsters, shrimp, and crabs. These are all primarily affected because of what we dump into the ocean.

2. Oil, fertilizers, garbage, sewage, toxic chemicals... Don't they just sound great? Well, I don't think so and neither do the animals that live in the ocean. These are the main causes of ocean pollution and these are also the main causes on why so many of our under water animals are becoming extinct. We don't think about the consequences of ocean pollution, nor do we think about pollution itself. 80% of marine pollution come from land-based activities. We are proven so guilty of this because we are the land creatures! Ocean pollution has no become a worldwide problem and not only has it affected and killed off many of the sea animals, but has had a negative impact on the beauty of creation and has had a negative affect on us. Unfortunately, not much is being done to solve this problem. Joining organizations to save the whales or save the ocean is great, but it takes more than just words or a title, but action. How did ocean pollution increase so much? What could be done, you ask? Well, let's find out!

3. Have you ever walked along the shoreline with your family and have just been disgusted by what is laying on the sand? Has your family ever just avoided a beach because of its filth or uncleanliness? I know my family has and unfortunately more than once. Ocean pollution has not just had a negative affect on the water itself, but it has had a negative affect on the beaches as well. People do not think twice about pollution and unfortunately it has become a worldwide problem! How many times have you seen someone just throw a bottle into a lake or river, or simply see a bag of chips floating around the sea when walking the boardwalk? Unfortunately, the things we dump into the water always lead back to shore! Not only do they lead back to shore, but many sea animals also swallow these things and are affected greatly by them. How would you like it if someone tried to shove an empty bag of chips down your throat? I know I wouldn't like it and neither do these animals. Because of this happening, many sea animals are also dying off and their bodies also lead to shore as well. Ocean pollution also has a greatly negative affect on the beaches and it taking over vacation spots and family fun. What can be done to stop this? Let's look deeper into it!

Exercise 4.2 (p 157-158)

Thesis from a Question of Value

Based on recent research on Ocean Pollution and its rapid increase around the world within the past few years, its evidence suggests that that we are the primary cause and effect of this problem because of our careless in our interaction with the environment. It also suggests that we are doing all that we can to put an end to ocean pollution, but much still has yet to be done to solve this problem.

The purpose for this blog assignment was to help develop a thesis for our upcoming research paper by displaying the topic, a comment, a who, a what, a where, a when, and a why. By using the template provided by Curious Researcher (Ballenger 158), I believe I was able to form a strong thesis that would answer a readers question. I found this assignment to be very beneficial to the contribute of my research paper.

Exercise 4.1 (p 144-145)

I am writing a research paper and must make known to the audience my topic of choice, answering any questions they might have. This exercise is beneficial because it helps me narrow my writing and make it more concise to maintain the readers interest. This exercise really displayed what I need to focus on more in my topic, what areas need more research, and what areas I have enough research on.

My topic for my research essay is on Ocean Pollution, how it has progressed throughout the years, the affects it has had on us and vice-versa, and what could we do or what is being done to solve this problem. Ocean pollution is big problem in today's society especially because it has an effect on us everyday without us even realizing it. This is a world-wide issue and no body of water is better than another with the rate that we are destroying it today. We forget about the affects that ocean pollution has on us today such as contaminating or killing of sea animals. This not only alters or affects the life water cycle, but prevents us from eating. Ah! You may say this is not a problem because we have other animals to munch on, but some of those other animals that we eat, live off of eating sea animals. Also, we can't forget the vegetarians! They need some kind of protein and some vegetarians eat sea animals as a source of protein. Maybe, you might be one of those that don't eat any kind of animals at all, and primarily are about saving them! This once goes out to the zoologist who care about the sea animals. Well, because of societies pollution on the ocean, our sea animals such as dolphins and other big fish are swallowing containers and plastic bags and glass bottles and are dying from choking or just from its harm. This affects how other sea animals eat because no other sea animals are unable to eat because we are killing their food cycle. For those of you who have no interest in animals, but care about God's creation, why are we destroying what He made to be good and beautiful. As stewards of God's creation we should do all we can to display His glory through our actions. Making a difference and caring for God's creation, like he cares for us (also His creation), can really have a positive impact on the environment so other's can see His glory through His beautiful creation. Lastly for those who do not care about God's creation, or animals, or vegetarians, or just a clean environment, but love going to the beach, just know that the beaches are also being affected. A lot of debris and waste and trash that we dump into the ocean always finds it was back to shore and pollutes the beaches that we take our families and friends to. I don't know about you, but I know I personally do not want to sit in a pile of what is 96% waste, 3% sand, and 1% animals that have been killed off by our pollution.
In doing much research on ocean pollution, the primary cause is us and our laziness to not just go the a regular garbage and throw out our trash and the harmful chemicals we dump into the ocean thinking its a way to ride them. It surprised me to see that so much of this happening and this also affects our having clean water. We do not stop to think about others around the world whose only water source are rivers and lakes and oceans because they do not have clean water like us. Not putting only all the blame on us, but we need to think of how blessed we are to even have rivers and lakes that we could look at and here we are polluting and destroying them.

We need to step up and start taking care of ocean pollution. There are many things being done now by oceanographers, marine technicians, and engineers to fix this problem such as building machines that could test the pollution level, machines that can detect what is dirty, and equipment for the marine biologist to go in and remove as much debris as they can. Also, different types of water veterinarians and zoologist are doing all they can to help these animals.
I am confident that something needs to be done about this, but I do not feel as if we are doing as much as we really should to stop or change this. We need to come together and look at the affects from every aspect and create more ways in which we could rid our beach waste, such as putting more local garbage cans on the beaches or boardwalks and even sidewalks, team up with different organizations that are trying to prevent this, or become leaders and make our own organizations. I am choosing to major in marine biology to solve this problem as much as I can and save the ocean or God's beautiful creation!

Annotated Bibliography

Hamel, Maurice. "Christians And The Environment - Is Pollution Part Of God's Plan?" Is Pollution Part of God's Plan? Surf-In-The-Spirit, 2002. Web. 03 Apr. 2014.

This article is a credible source for my research because it is written from a Christian perspective, but offers diverse alternatives and ways that we could change the circumstances of pollution in a way that everyone, including the non-Christians can come to terms with and also get involved. The author's credentials include various blogs, different websites and also has experience in previously being Environmental Geologist and currently having the occupation of an Environmental Geologist Creationist. Date-wise, the publication is important to include because worldviews have changed majorly in the previous years. The author's main goal in this article is to inform, teach, and persuade others about the pollution in this world, how we are the cause, and to trust in God's perfect plan for Him to save the land and how we can contribute to the beauty of His creation. The publishing source for this article generally targets an audience that fits the following description: Christian's, and environmentalist. This audience would be interested in this subjects because it gives a a godly perspective of how we could contribute to then positive change of God's creation, it reminds us that God is all powerful and will take care of His creation, and offers alternatives on what we could do to stop pollution. They would generally both agree and disagree with this author's perspective on the topic. The author incorporates the following types of evidence: Bible verses and examples of pollution. This evidence builds credibility because of the biblical relation and because it is written from a professional and experienced environmental geologist, but is also limited because there are no facts or statistics given. Based on my own opinion, experiences, and research, I both agree and disagree with this author because I think his primary argument for pollution is a consequence due to sin, and I do understand that yes, the world is not perfect because we sinned, but I don't believe it is just a consequences. I think it is just our human nature to be lazy and pollute and I think we are the primary causes of pollution. But I do agree with the fact that He states that God is all powerful and can easily fix this. I think this article is important to include in my essay because it is not only given from a christian world view, but was also written by someone who has had much experience in this field.

Garces, Diego M. "Marine Problems: Pollution." WWF Global. WWF International, 2000. Web. 02 Apr. 2014.

This article is a credible source for my research because it comes from an organizations that strictly deals with the well-being of animals and is professional organization. Also, this organization has been up and running since 1971 and is still trust worthy. Date-wise this publication is important to include because the amount of years this organization has made a difference in the environment is important. It also allows others trust that there is proof in its success. The authors main goal in the article is to inform us about the different types of ocean pollution there are and to teach us about the ways they are caused and how they are currently affecting marine life. The publishing source for this article generally targets an audience that fits the following description: marine biologist or environmentalist. This audience would be interested in this subjects because they marine biologist could also be affected by the harmful types of pollution in the ocean and environmentalist and those who care about preserving the land and ocean because marine pollution also affects the land and would generally agree with the authors perspective on this topic. The author incorporates the following types of evidence: facts and statistics, and tests on marine animals to explain causes of death. This evidence builds credibility because it displays evidence that the facts have been tested and are true and gives a lists of other credible sources that also agree and have also tested these facts, but is also limited because it only lists a few types of pollution. Based on my own opinion, experiences, and research, I agree with this author because those are the types of pollution I have seen and have heard about the news consistently. I think this article is important to include in my essay because it includes facts, it is written by an organization that has proven to be successful in their work, and includes causes that I have also seen, and also cares about the well-being of marine animals.

NOAA's National Ocean Service. "What Is the Biggest Source of Pollution in the Ocean?" National Ocean Service. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 25 Mar. 2014. Web. 01 Apr. 2014.

This article is a credible source for my research because it has been recently updated, so the time is credible and is written from a service that has been around years and have proven facts of marine pollution and is also a credible website (.gov). The author's credentials include years of experienced professionals testing facts of ocean pollution and is a professional organization. Date-wise this publication is important because to include because of the many years this organization has been around and the climactic changes and world changes throughout the year and what is NOW being done to stop ocean pollution. The authors main goal in this article is to inform and persuade the audience about ocean pollution's increase throughout the years and how we can contribute to help stop it. The publishing source for this article generally targets an audience that fits the following description: environmentalist or oceanographers. This audience would be interested in this subject because this article pertains to diverse ways that we could stop ocean pollution and offers a professional organization that one can team up with to help. This audience would generally agree with this author's perspective on the topic. The author incorporates the following types of evidence: statistics, professionals experience, and projects being done to stop this. This evidence builds credibility because of the evidence of pollution displayed, but is also limited because it doesn't give many alternatives to solving ocean pollution. Based on my opinion, experiences, and research, I agree with this author because the different types of projects they are doing to put an end to ocean pollution can be beneficial. I think this article is important to include in my essay because it speaks primarily about diverse projects and different experiments that are taking pace to decrease ocean pollution.

IFCI. "Why Is the Bible and Water Important to Christians?" Why Is the Bible and Water Important to Christians? J & E Water Filters and Quality Drinking Water, 2010. Web. 03 Apr. 2014.

This article is a credible source for my research paper because it uses evidence of Bible verses and is part of an organization that specializes in clean water. The publishing source for this article generally targets an audience that fits the following descriptions: Christians. This audience would be interested in this subject because it speaks about the importance of water and how God made it to be important. They would generally agree with this authors perspective on the topic. The author incorporates the following types of evidence: Biblical views and Bible Verses. This evidence builds credibility because the argument is supported by scripture, but is also limited because it is only supported by scripture and no other sources. Based on my own opinion, experiences, and research, I agree with this author because the Bible verses and biblical view is not only correct through scripture, but would also be very persuasive to a non-believer. I think this article is important to include in my essay because it gives a strong biblical foundation and argument on clean water and how Christians should perceive it.

Bernard, Murrye. "Solutions for Ocean Pollution." LoveToKnow. LoveToKnow, 2006. Web. 03 Apr. 2014.

This article is a credible source for my research because it was written by a professional BA Architect and gives a lists of other similar sources. The author's credentials include a degree in BA Architect and a profession in it. Date-wise this publication is important to include because it speaks about current solutions to fix ocean pollution with updated technology. The author's main goal in this article is to inform and teach how to fix ocean pollution and provides various ways in which one can get involved. The publishing source for this article generally targets an audience that fits the following description: marine biologist, zoologist, environmentalist. This audience would be interested in this subject because this article provides solutions and alternatives and lists many different ways in which we are currently trying to fix the pollution in the ocean and ways to try and help the ocean animals. This audience would generally both agree and disagree with the author's perspective on the topic. They would disagree only with the conclusion that more can be done than what is just listed. The author incorporates the following types of evidence: videos of pollution and a list of organizations and their current work in trying to save the ocean. This evidence builds credibility because of the videos of proof of the current issue with ocean pollution and different links to different websites that speak further on the cause. This is also limited because it only covers a few ways in which we could make a change. Based on my own opinion, experiences, and research, I both agree and disagree with this author for the same reasons the audience would. I think this article is important to include in my essay because there are various sources and places to recieve further information for my essay.

Ex. 2.2 (p 84, STEP 1, 2, & 3)

I am learning how to do more advanced Internet research on my research topic rather than always using the sources I know such as google or wikipedia or yahoo. Not only will I have more sources for more information, but something I discovered from each website or search that you could directly search a word and have a focus and there are specific website that allow you to just search on the website itself. This assignment really contributed greatly and positively to my search and helped me with my academic research.

Ex. 1.5 (Pg 45-46): Research Proposal

It is important to have a research question in mind before beginning your research paper, that way you have an idea or source that you could rely on to stay on the topic of choice. In Bruce Ballenger's book, The Curious Researcher, he explains that we usually form a research question to explore because when you post a question you are unsure of the answer and one can build a strong essay off of what they explore. You also form a research question to argue and this allows you to test your hypothesis and influence what the reader might assume or know.

For this assignment, I created my research proposal that outlines or is going to further outline my research plan.

Inquiry Question: What can be done to change this the negative affects we have on the ocean or underwater life?

Primary Purpose: To discover the negative effects we have on the ocean and what we are doing to change this.

Explore: How do we have an affect on underwater life? What is being done to protect underwater life? Is there any new technology that is being made to help this? How did it get to where it was? Why is it the way it is? What could we do to change this?

Argue: I am testing whether or not we today are doing anything to fix this problem. My main claim or thesis is that evidence shows that there are many different negative effects on the ocean such as pollution and noise related effects.

I chose this project because this is the major I am heading towards and I have a huge heart for underwater life because as much as people seem to not pay much attention to it, it is ultimately, God's beautiful creation. I already have an idea of how much pollution fills diverse bodies of water. I come with the prejudice that that we are ultimately the cause for the negative effects of the underwater life. A personal experience that really shapes the way I feel is the one time I went swimming with the dolphins in Mexico and they had the dolphins within a certain area of the ocean because they were trying to keep out all the polluted water. Also, I went swimming with the sea lions and in the area that I was in they had them in a pool instead because the water was too polluted for them to be in.

Before beginning this topic of research I was thinking that this was going to be a very simple assignment and also fun because I have such a heart for it. It is still fun and I cannot wait to do more research it, but I realize now that is not as simple as it seems and there are many different areas of research and many different types of technologies for different places and different bodies of water. There are a lot of sources and much research to be done!

In this exercise from The Curious Researcher, writer Bruce Ballenger challenges us to create an interest inventory. He declares that a lot of students do not show an interest in anything enough to write a paper, but he disagrees with this and so do I. Creating an interest inventory opens the doorways to brainstorming and allows you to ask more questions or build questions off of your thoughts. This also helps to form a primary focus question which is helpful when writing your research paper because it allows you to do primary research on your question. This also helps build a layout or format to follow and list of things one can include in their research paper.

RETHINKING RESEARCH: CR 1-12 (EXERCISE #1, pg 1)

"You can't use the pronoun I."

I agree with this statement. I don't believe one should use the pronoun I when writing a research paper because the writing should be objective. When one uses "I" it makes it personal or subjective, and that may alter the readers perspective. In a research paper, the feedback and dependence from another source is required because one is digging up details on information from a particular subject that is not about oneself. This does not mean that I do not think that ones personal opinion should not be included, but it should not be the lead of a research paper. In a research paper one should build personal habits of mind that allow you to question and gather the information needed. For the writing to be formal the writer must show their presence without making it known. I believe a paper is more effective when the writer touches on the subject, gives a ghostly appearance and allowing the paper to be ore objective.

This statement goes along with what I believe should or should not be included in a research paper. In the book, The Curious Researcher, by Bruce Ballenger, he lists a series of statements and questions us whether a statement is a true or false in relation to a research paper. Then he challenges us to think through our writing to tell a story of whether the statement given has logic or corresponds to what we believe. I found this to be quite challenging, especially after asking certain people myself what they think. Many gave different answers and a lot found there to be no problem because one should include their intake, but after reading The Curious Researcher, I believe that if you are writing a research paper, yes your opinions are important, but you should primarily agree with your topic of choice because you are doing research on it, not an argumentative paper.
