Exercise 4.2 (p 157-158)

Thesis from a Question of Value

Based on recent research on Ocean Pollution and its rapid increase around the world within the past few years, its evidence suggests that that we are the primary cause and effect of this problem because of our careless in our interaction with the environment. It also suggests that we are doing all that we can to put an end to ocean pollution, but much still has yet to be done to solve this problem.

The purpose for this blog assignment was to help develop a thesis for our upcoming research paper by displaying the topic, a comment, a who, a what, a where, a when, and a why. By using the template provided by Curious Researcher (Ballenger 158), I believe I was able to form a strong thesis that would answer a readers question. I found this assignment to be very beneficial to the contribute of my research paper.

  1. Allison, how can you more clearly define the "we" in your thesis? While I assume that "we" refers to people, I think you can and should be more specific. Refer back to the "Other Ways to Narrow Your Subject" chart in The Curious Researcher (pg. 40). Also keep in mind that the cause of a problem (in this case humans) is not usually also the effect (or result). Essentially, as written, your thesis says that people cause ocean pollution, and the result of ocean pollution is people. So, what did you mean to write instead?

  2. Ultimately we are the cause of ocean pollution, and the effect is our unwillingness to do anything about it? We referring to the people. Is that better? I understand what you mean though! I will emphasize it more for sure!
